About this course
Participants develop paintings and drawings from observation and imagination, responding to prompts drawn from music, poetry, stories and other artworks. Projects introduce and combine painting principles including tone, colour, composition, layering and luminosity, alongside collage and mixed-media processes. Teaching includes demonstrations of paint handling, individual tuition, handouts, visual aids and regular group discussions and reviews. The course accommodates different levels of experience, with opportunities to explore varied techniques and materials and to develop work for possible progression in art and design.

The course is open to learners of all levels and experience. It combines individual work with tutor guidance, group reviews and discussions, while offering more experienced participants scope to extend their skills and investigate unfamiliar techniques or materials.

Before you go
- Drawing paper, a tear-off palette, paper towel and a water container are provided at the workstation.
- A weekly materials list is provided at the start of the course. Materials used may include charcoal, pencils, inks, pastels, wax crayons, acrylic paint, brushes and sponges.
- Participants need their own drawing board clips and/or masking tape. Specific projects may require additional collage papers, objects or textural materials.
- The class is on the first floor in a room with no lift access.
