Creative writing: short stories and flash fiction

About this course

The course examines how shorter narratives differ from novels, with attention to economical word choice, openings, plotting, scene-setting, tension, characterisation, dialogue and vivid imagery. Poetry forms and techniques are also introduced. Each class combines close reading of example texts with writing exercises, discussion and group work, followed by opportunities to read work aloud. Tutor and peer feedback supports reflection and self-editing, while participants produce short pieces of fiction and poetry during the course.

Is this course right for you?

Intended for intermediate learners with a good level of written English, stated as at least GCSE level. Participation includes reading and discussing texts, completing individual writing exercises, working in groups, sharing work aloud and responding to tutor and peer feedback.
