Crochet for beginners

About this course

The course introduces core crochet techniques through group demonstrations, individual guidance and repeated practice. Learners make reference swatches while practising chains, double crochet, half treble, treble, double treble and slip stitch. The course also covers working straight and in the round, creating stripes, increasing and decreasing, and understanding tension. Basic pattern reading, abbreviations, terminology and an introduction to chart reading are included. Handouts and course information are available through a Google Classroom learning environment, and learners are encouraged to practise techniques between classes.

What you'll learn

• Create chains and use a range of foundational crochet stitches.
• Work crochet straight, in the round, in stripes, and with increases and decreases.
• Produce sample swatches to record and review basic techniques.
• Recognise the importance of correct tension when working crochet.
• Interpret basic crochet pattern terminology, abbreviations and introductory charts.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for complete beginners, and no previous crochet knowledge is necessary. Learners should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, use numbers for basic measurements and calculations, and take part in group discussion. The course involves demonstrations followed by individual practice.

• Practice between classes is encouraged.
• Learners are invited to contribute to group discussion.

Before you go

• Participants are asked to bring at least one 4 mm or 4.5 mm crochet hook.
• Participants are asked to bring two balls of DK-weight yarn: one cream or natural colour and one light contrasting colour. Yarn with some wool content is preferred.
• A sketchbook or folder is advisable for storing swatches, handouts and notes.
• A digital camera may be useful for recording stitches, fabric and mark-making.
