About this course
The class introduces Cuban rhythms and dance forms including salsa, cha cha cha, mambo, Afro-Cuban rumba, reggaeton, son, rueda de casino, Mozambique, Pilón and Conga. Sessions combine warm-up activities, technique practice, solo styling and work with different musical rhythms. Learners practise recognising rhythmic differences, controlling movement qualities and combining steps in response to the music. Teaching includes regular tutor feedback, with digital resources such as film and photography used to support study.
What you'll learn
- Combine learned steps from different Cuban dance styles in response to the music
- Recognise and distinguish between different salsa rhythms
- Control movement across contrasting Cuban dance styles and rhythms
- Improvise with learned steps in response to quieter and more dynamic sections of the music
Is this course right for you?
The course is aimed at improver-level learners and involves energetic physical activity, solo styling, rhythmic practice and improvisation. Basic salsa and cha cha cha steps are described as an advantage rather than a stated requirement. Learners are expected to practise routines between classes and take part in occasional activities to share exercises with the group.
- Some familiarity with basic salsa and cha cha cha steps may be helpful
- Regular attendance and punctuality are expected
- Preparation and practice between classes form part of the course
- Learners should tell the tutor about any physical activity they have been advised to avoid
Before you go
- Wear clothing that allows free movement.
- Bring light trainers. Boots and thick-soled trainers are not suitable.
- Female dancers may find that soft-soled shoes with a small heel assist styling.
- Learners should consult a doctor if pregnant, managing a serious health condition or with a history of injury.
- Photography and filming may be used for learning and publicity. Learners can give or decline consent.
- Remember routines from the previous week and prepare favourite exercises to share where requested.
