About this course

The course examines film history through a selection of indicative films, considering changes in film form, visual style and the ways audiences experience cinema. Each session combines a tutor introduction with a complete screening, followed by a large-group discussion informed by film-studies approaches. Discussion and analysis draw on personal, historical and theoretical perspectives on spectatorship, while introducing terminology used in critical film analysis. The film programme may include works from different periods, countries and genres, subject to availability.

Participation involves watching complete films and contributing to discussions in a large group. Researching a film before class may be useful but is not essential.
