About this course

The course examines film history through selected films from different periods, countries and cinematic traditions. Sessions consider how film form has developed, how directors articulate visual styles and how spectatorship can be understood personally, historically and theoretically. Teaching combines an introduction to each film, screening the complete work and a large-group discussion afterwards. The course also introduces the terminology and theoretical perspectives used in critical film analysis.
