Cutting it fine: collage in modern & contemporary art

About this course

This art history study day follows collage from early paper-based practices and European examples in woodcut prints, miniature painting, textiles and photography to its use in modern and contemporary art. It considers Cubist papier collé, political photomontage and the relationship between collage and Duchamp’s readymades, alongside later practices involving sculpture, textiles and digital media. Teaching combines lectures, slide presentations and group discussions of selected works, with examples addressing the social, political and cultural contexts in which collage has developed.

Is this course right for you?

The course is suitable for learners at all levels and is structured as an art history study day rather than a practical making course. Participants will be taught through lectures and slides, with group discussion forming part of the session. Learners should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations and health and safety information.
