About this course

The course uses close reading of a varied selection of canonical, lesser-known, modern and contemporary poetry in English. Participants examine how rhyme, rhythm, voice, tone, mood, form, structure, figurative language, imagery, conceits, allegory and allusions shape interpretation. Teaching combines tutor introductions with guided prompts, small-group work and whole-class discussion. Readings include poems by writers such as Emily Dickinson, Wilfred Owen, Sylvia Plath, Carol Ann Duffy and Margaret Atwood, with attention to how different voices and readings can coexist.
