About this course

This course develops filmmaking and editing practice across the production process, with attention to both planning and post-production. Participants examine camera operation, storyboard construction and camera choreography, considering shot types, camera placement and scene planning. They also explore recording audio in-camera or with a separate device, then assess cuts and editing choices involving content, structure and rhythm. Teaching combines workshops, short lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises, tutorials, individual and group assistance, and hand-outs.

What you'll learn

• Operate a camera to produce essential filmmaking set-ups and shot types.
• Identify the key elements of a storyboard when developing a story.
• Plan camera choreography for a scene.
• Use a separate audio recorder alongside a camera.
• Distinguish between effective cuts and cuts that do not work as intended.
• Differentiate between at least two types of story driver.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners with some existing knowledge and experience of filmmaking and editing. The Improver level suggests development beyond fundamental techniques. Participation includes practical exercises, demonstrations, group discussion and individual work, with simple written instructions, calculations and measurements involved.

• Learners should be able to follow written and verbal instructions for demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information.
• The course includes group discussion as well as individual assistance.
• Some use of numbers, measurements and simple calculations is involved.

Before you go

• An external drive suitable for video editing, with at least 500 GB capacity, is recommended.
• The course uses Apple Mac computers.
