Develop your jewellery design and making

About this course

Participants develop their own jewellery ideas, working independently or through short structured projects rather than a shared class project. The tutor provides demonstrations, photographic examples, advice and individual support to help extend existing making skills and explore different approaches to design. The course covers the working properties of metal and other materials, a range of jewellery-making techniques, and the use of hand tools and workshop machinery. Health and safety practice is also addressed within the studio work.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for improvers who are already fairly experienced in jewellery making and want to work more independently on their own projects. It involves individual work with tutor guidance, alongside demonstrations and informal group discussion. Learners should be able to follow written and verbal instructions, use simple measurements and calculations, and recognise basic geometric shapes.

Before you go

• Most tools and equipment for jewellery making are provided.
• Basic materials, including base metals, paper, enamel, chemicals and workshop sundries, are supplied in reasonable quantities.
• Learners need to buy some specific items, such as saw blades, precious metals and stones.
• A sketchbook is needed for design work and notes.
