About this course

Participants develop their own jewellery designs, either independently or through short structured projects, with advice on refining ideas and exploring different approaches to making. The course is organised around individual projects rather than a shared class assignment. Teaching takes place in a jewellery workshop through demonstrations, photographic examples and individual support. Work may extend existing skills while introducing further techniques, with attention to the working properties of metals and other materials, workshop health and safety, and the use of hand tools and machinery.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for improvers who are already fairly experienced in jewellery making and can work with limited supervision. Participants develop their own projects, follow demonstrations and instructions, and may take part in informal group discussions.

• Not suitable for complete beginners
• Previous confidence with piercing, filing, drilling, annealing, soldering, bending and forming is expected
• Participants should be comfortable with simple measurements, calculations and geometric shapes

Before you go

• Most tools and equipment are provided, along with basic materials in reasonable quantities.
• Participants need to buy some specific items, including saw blades, precious metals and stones.
• A sketchbook is required for design work and notes.
• Participants must bring an apron and safety glasses.
• Sensible footwear is required. Sandals, open shoes and small pumps are not permitted in the studio.
