Developing graphic design

About this course

The course develops practical and conceptual graphic design skills through work with layout, grids, hierarchy, typography, colour, shape and pattern. Participants explore how design communicates information across print and digital applications, while considering historical and contemporary movements and styles. Teaching combines presentations, demonstrations, practical projects, individual and group tutoring, and discussion. Projects involve researching, developing and realising designs in response to briefs, with opportunities to reflect on and discuss developing personal practice. Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign are included.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for intermediate learners, typically those who have completed an introductory graphic design course or have equivalent knowledge and experience. Participation includes practical work, demonstrations, individual and group tutoring, group discussion and reflection on learners’ own work. Additional extension activities may be set outside class.

• Previous introductory study or equivalent knowledge and experience is expected.
• Learners should be able to follow verbal and written instructions and take part in group discussions.

Before you go

• Basic materials and resources are available as part of the course.
• Learners are advised to bring an A5 or A4 sketchbook for recording ideas.
• An A3 folder and/or USB drive is recommended for transporting work.
• Any additional materials needed will be discussed during the course.
