Developing your playwriting

About this course

The course develops playwriting through characterisation, theme, plot, subtext, dialogue and style, with attention to forms including naturalism, expressionism and surrealism. Participants will examine more challenging plays, writers and theatre makers, then experiment with techniques in their own work. Teaching combines writing exercises, improvisation, discussion and workshopping. Learners will create scenes, plots and characters, share writing for group feedback, and work towards a first draft of a play.

Is this course right for you?

This continuation course is intended for improver-level writers rather than complete beginners. New students may be suitable if they have previous writing experience, an idea for a project or a play in progress, and an interest in theatre. Participation includes group discussion, feedback and sharing work, alongside writing outside class.

• The course does not cover the basics of playwriting
• A good standard of written and spoken English is expected
• Learners should be prepared to discuss and share their work
• Some writing and play reading are expected outside class

Before you go

• Bring writing materials.
• Written work is expected at home, and learners will be asked to read scenes or extracts from plays outside class.
• Learners are encouraged to alert the tutor and group in advance if shared writing contains sensitive material.
