About this course

Participants will examine zine styles and their relationship to different types of content, then develop a zine from initial ideas through to a final publication. The course covers booklet construction, image-making, typography, editing, page layout and low-fi printing processes, with attention to both construction and publication. Teaching combines presentations, demonstrations, practical activities, individual and group tutoring, and group discussions. Learners will also reflect on their own work and creative process during the course.

  • Compare different approaches to zine-making and select formats suited to particular content
  • Apply booklet construction techniques to develop a zine
  • Create and edit typography, images and page layouts for publication
  • Explain low-fi processes used in zine construction and printing
  • Produce and present a final zine based on a personal topic

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for improvers developing their zine-making knowledge, particularly those who have completed Explore: Zine Making or have similar experience or interest. Participation includes practical work, individual and group tutoring, discussions and reflection on personal work. English-language competency is required to follow instructions and take part in discussions.

  • Previous completion of Explore: Zine Making or similar experience or interest is identified as suitable preparation.
  • The course includes both individual work and group discussions.
  • Learners need to follow verbal and written instructions, demonstrations and health and safety information in English.

Before you go

  • Basic materials and resources are available as part of the course.
  • Learners are advised to bring ideas and imagery they may wish to use.
  • Bring an A5 or A4 sketchbook for recording ideas, plus an A3 folder and/or USB drive for transporting work.
  • Any additional materials required will be discussed during the course.
