Diaspora history: Chinese communities around the world

About this course

The course follows Chinese migration from the Tang Dynasty to the present, considering movements to Southeast Asia, North America, Europe and Africa. It gives particular attention to Chinese communities in the UK and London, including the development of Limehouse and Soho Chinatowns. Teaching combines lectures and slides with discussion, debate and small-group analysis of original sources and handouts. Topics include the economic effects of diaspora, cultural influence abroad, return migration, and contemporary issues affecting Chinese communities.
