About this course

Participants develop digital illustrations from their own sketches using Photoshop and Illustrator. The course covers scanning marks and textures, changing scale, layout, colour and texture, and combining layers, filters, text and digital paintbrushes. Learners also make basic vector drawings and consider standard and alternative print processes, including preparation for giclée, Risography and screen printing. Teaching combines presentations, demonstrations, practical tasks, individual and group tutoring, and discussion. Examples from historical and contemporary creatives inform the work, alongside critical evaluation and self-reflection.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for intermediate learners developing digital illustration skills. Previous Adobe experience is not required, but participants should be able to use generic computer software. English-language competency is needed to follow instructions and demonstrations, take part in discussions and understand written information.

  • No prior knowledge of Adobe software is required
  • Generic computer skills are expected
  • Teaching includes individual and group tutoring, practical work and group discussion
  • Additional tasks may be suggested for completion outside class

Before you go

  • Basic materials and resources are available as part of the course.
  • Participants are advised to bring an A5 or A4 sketchbook.
  • An A3 folder and/or USB drive is recommended for transporting work.
  • Any additional materials required will be discussed by the tutor.
