About this course

The course combines technical theory with practical exercises, including location shooting and equipment demonstrations. Topics include the behaviour and colour of natural and artificial light, lens selection and focusing, metering, white balance, exposure bracketing, exposure compensation and histogram interpretation. Participants also examine hyperfocal distance, techniques for photographing moving subjects, flash use and accessories such as reflectors, diffusers and light shapers. The teaching focuses on making deliberate photographic decisions rather than simply taking pictures.

What you'll learn

  • Analyse natural and artificial light in terms of direction, quality, colour and form.
  • Apply manual camera settings and intermediate exposure techniques, including bracketing and exposure compensation.
  • Select lenses and use focusing adjustments for different photographic subjects.
  • Use metering modes, white balance controls and histograms to produce more balanced exposures.
  • Apply hyperfocal distance and advanced focusing techniques when photographing still or moving subjects.
  • Use flashguns, reflectors, diffusers and other accessories to modify light.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for improvers who already have a good understanding of basic exposure and their camera’s manual settings. Participants work through technical explanations alongside practical shooting exercises and equipment demonstrations.

  • A working knowledge of aperture, shutter speed, ISO, lenses and exposure modes is expected.
  • Suitable cameras include mirrorless, DSLR or compact models with full manual controls.
  • Classes are limited to eight students.

Before you go

  • Participants should bring a camera with full manual controls, its manual, a fully charged battery and an empty memory card.
  • A camera can be borrowed during class if required, but loan equipment cannot be taken outside the class.
  • Comfortable shoes are recommended.
  • An external flash may be brought if owned; other necessary props and accessories are provided.
