About this course

The course examines how photographers can develop a distinctive approach through portfolio reviews, discussions of contemporary photographers and guided workshops that turn research into visual responses. Participants review and strengthen existing work, considering how images are selected, sequenced and presented. Sessions also address portfolio websites, current approaches to marketing photography, competitions, visibility and planning longer-term projects. Tutor feedback and group discussion are used to assess work produced during the course and consider possible professional routes, including ways of making a living from photography.

What you'll learn

  • Define and refine a personal photography style
  • Evaluate, select and sequence images within a portfolio
  • Respond visually to the work of contemporary photographers
  • Develop approaches to marketing photography and presenting work online
  • Plan longer-term photographic projects and prepare work for competitions

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for photographers who are comfortable with their camera and core technical settings, and are ready to concentrate on style, portfolio development and professional direction rather than basic technique. Participation includes presenting work for review, receiving tutor feedback and discussing work in a group.

  • Direct entry is possible without completing the provider’s Levels 1 and 2 if technical understanding is already solid.

Before you go

  • Bring a selection of current work for portfolio review; it does not need to be polished.
  • Bring a digital camera, preferably a DSLR or mirrorless model, and any lenses used for the course.
  • A laptop or tablet for reviewing images is recommended.
