Discovering French Cinema

About this course

The course surveys French cinema from the invention of the moving image in 1895 through the 1930s, wartime occupation, the New Wave and more recent developments. Historical and cultural context is explored alongside examples from key films. Teaching combines illustrated notes, extensive film clips and discussion of their content. Participants are encouraged to watch films independently and share their interpretations and experiences in class, with regular detailed feedback from the tutor.
