About this course

The course centres on creating a photo essay about a current-affairs or social-issue theme in London. On location, learners receive guidance on documentary photography theory, its history, composition, subject selection and visual storytelling. Sessions also address visual criticism, debate, new visual writing, and ethical and safe practice in the field. Learners consider how to plan and develop a portfolio for possible exhibition or publication, with practical advice provided throughout the workshop.

Before you go

  • Bring a mirrorless, DSLR or compact camera with full manual controls. A camera can be borrowed if needed.
  • Bring the camera manual, a fully charged battery and an empty memory card.
  • Bring a light rucksack or camera bag and comfortable shoes.
  • A lightweight tripod may be brought optionally.
