About this course

The course examines how flat pattern cutting and three-dimensional draping influence one another in bespoke garment development. Through project work, learners experiment with pattern manipulation, including slash-and-spread, dart manipulation and seaming, while translating ideas between paper patterns and the stand. Teaching combines whole-class demonstrations and discussion with individual guidance, supported by examples, samples, handouts and regular tutor feedback. Exercises cover both traditional and more experimental approaches to pattern making, including the creative use of flat cutting alongside draping.

Is this course right for you?

The course is labelled for all levels but is aimed at learners building on existing pattern-cutting skills and working towards intermediate or advanced practice. At least one beginner pattern-cutting course is recommended preparation; previous stand-draping knowledge is useful but optional. Learners must be able to read, write and understand fluent English.

• Some activities involve standing at high tables for periods of time.
• Digital, mathematics and numeracy skills are desirable but not essential.
• The teaching includes both whole-class work and individual tutor guidance.

Before you go

• Learners must bring a basic sewing kit, pattern-drafting kit and note-taking materials.
• Learners must provide their own project materials, haberdashery and threads.
• Some pattern-cutting and garment-construction tools, paper and card are available in the studio.
• Specialist materials such as calico may be available to purchase from the tutor.
• The fashion studios are on the first floor, with lift access.
• Eating and drinking are not permitted in the studios, although bottled water is allowed.
