About this course

The course examines figurative, still-life and landscape subjects in greater depth, combining established drawing and painting approaches with experimental techniques. Learners develop personal projects around selected themes, ideas or subjects, informed by museum and gallery visits and discussion of art-historical and contemporary contexts. Teaching includes technical demonstrations, questions and answers, observation, group discussion, and tutor, peer and self-feedback. Sketchbook work supports reflection on creative intentions, while home or studio practice gives learners time to develop and assess their work.

What you'll learn

  • Apply a range of drawing and painting materials and techniques to personally focused work.
  • Use a sketchbook to reflect on creative intentions and the direction of a project.
  • Produce artwork conveying a personal response to a given or self-initiated theme, idea or subject.
  • Relate personal aims to selected contemporary and art-historical contexts.
  • Set objectives for individual pieces of work and evaluate their strengths and shortcomings.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners who already understand basic drawing and painting concepts and approaches. The improver level indicates work beyond fundamental techniques. Participation combines independent home or studio practice with demonstrations, group discussions and tutor, peer and self-feedback.

  • Entry may follow completion of Draw and Paint: Learn the Basics, a tutor recommendation or review of previous work.
  • Learners develop individual projects within a programme that includes discussion and feedback.

Before you go

  • Participants need to provide a sketchbook, brushes, A3 paper, a palette, basic acrylic or oil paints, pencils, charcoal, a putty rubber and cartridge paper in light and heavier weights for painting.
  • The teaching room is accessible only by stairs and has no lift access.
