About this course

The course develops drawing as a process, extending observational work through linked projects and tasks. Participants work with different scales, durations, tools, materials and mark-making approaches while exploring three-dimensional form, spatial relationships and visual dynamics in composition. Teaching combines practical studio exercises with short demonstrations, handouts, one-to-one guidance and group discussion. Learners analyse their own drawings and those of others, reflect on their work, and examine methods and ideas from historical and contemporary drawing practice. An off-site drawing session may take place when conditions allow.

What you'll learn

  • Draw from observation using a range of fine and broad drawing media.
  • Describe three-dimensional form and spatial depth using taught techniques.
  • Analyse compositional choices in individual work and group drawing sessions.
  • Identify methods and ideas in historical and contemporary drawing practice.
  • Evaluate personal drawings and discuss the work of others.

Is this course right for you?

This improver/intermediate course is intended for learners who have some experience of drawing in a studio environment and working from observation. It suits participants who can follow verbal and written guidance, demonstrations and health and safety information, and take part in individual reflection and group discussion.

  • Some prior observational drawing experience is envisaged, such as completing Drawing 1 or understanding basic strategies for describing three-dimensional form.
  • The course combines individual drawing, one-to-one guidance and group discussion.
  • Learners are expected to engage with self-reflection as part of the learning process.

Before you go

  • Basic drawing materials and resources, including paper, pencils and charcoal, are provided.
  • Participants may bring additional specialist materials if they wish.
