About this course

Participants study the structure and proportions of the human face from different viewpoints before developing a painted portrait from observational drawing. The course covers tonal painting, skin-tone colour mixing, light and shade, brush application and approaches used by traditional portrait artists. Teaching combines practical demonstrations, tutor demonstrations, one-to-one tuition, discussion of artists’ work and reflection on individual practice.

What you'll learn

  • Use light and shade to describe form in the human head
  • Mix colour palettes to represent temperature and hue in skin tones
  • Apply paint using a range of brush techniques
  • Develop a painted portrait based on observational drawing
