Drawing and Painting: still life to figure

A mixed-level studio course covering observational drawing, painting, still life, portraiture and figure studies through demonstrations and guided exercises.
About this course
The course develops drawing and painting through observation-based work, beginning with still life and later introducing clothed figure studies and portraiture. Participants use measuring techniques, viewfinders and preliminary studies to explore proportion, tonal values, composition and negative space. Colour theory, mixing, palette management and varied painting techniques are introduced alongside work inspired by historical and contemporary artists. Teaching combines demonstrations, individual guidance, tutor feedback, group discussion and presentations of artists’ work. Longer technical exercises sit alongside shorter observational studies, with projects sometimes continuing across several sessions. Each class ends with a mini exhibition and group feedback.
