About this course

Participants will make observational studies of plant and flower specimens, examining their structure through line, tone, texture and mark-making. The course explores colour mixing, blending and layering with oil and soft pastels, alongside ways to simplify complex natural forms and develop compositions from small to larger studies. Demonstrations, presentations, handouts, individual and group tutoring, and group discussion support the studio work. Examples from historical and contemporary artists provide reference points for exploring different approaches to the subject.

What you'll learn

  • Create observational studies of plants and flowers using varied techniques and grounds
  • Analyse and simplify the structural qualities of complex natural forms
  • Mix, blend and layer oil and soft pastels to produce colour and texture
  • Develop compositions with a more personal approach, informed by artists’ work
