Drawing from Scratch

About this course

The course develops observational drawing by examining how line and tone can be recorded accurately. Participants work with pencil, coloured pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, chalk and pastels, exploring techniques such as continuous line, hatching and drawing around the form. Teaching combines formal instruction, tutor demonstrations, practical studio work, individual verbal feedback and group critiques. Sessions also introduce positive and negative space, mixed media, collage and compositional approaches, with examples from art history used as reference.

Is this course right for you?

The course is designed for complete beginners as well as learners with some drawing experience who want to practise and develop their skills. It is studio-based and involves practical work, individual feedback, group critiques and exchanging ideas with other participants.
