About this course

The course examines the relationship between drawing and painting, including how drawn studies can prepare for a painting and help with decisions during its development. Participants will work from observation and explore abstract marks, gesture and composition before combining drawing and painting approaches in a developed piece. Teaching includes studio-based tasks, tutor demonstrations, one-to-one guidance, presentations and group discussion. Examples from historic and contemporary artists will provide context for different relationships between drawn and painted marks, alongside reflection on participants’ own work.

  • Apply drawing as a tool for decision-making and problem-solving in painting
