Drawing into watercolour painting

About this course

This studio-based course examines drawing as both a compositional starting point and an integrated layer within a watercolour painting. Participants explore drawn marks, tonal areas, brush gestures and colour planning, using examples from historic and contemporary artists to place these approaches in context. Practical tasks are supported by tutor demonstrations, one-to-one guidance, presentations and group discussion. The course considers how drawing and watercolour can work together while retaining their distinct qualities, including directness, intimacy and portability.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners in drawing and watercolour painting, as well as learners with some previous experience who want to explore a different approach. Participation includes studio tasks, demonstrations, individual guidance and group discussions. Learners should be able to follow verbal and written instructions, demonstrations, handouts and health and safety information.
