Drawing: old master techniques

About this course

The course examines how Old Master drawings use structure, tone and line. Participants begin with research studies and copies of selected works, then practise cross-hatching, smudging, line techniques and pen-and-ink methods. Work on mid-tone paper includes the Trois Crayons approach using black, sanguine and white pastels. Demonstrations, group discussion and one-to-one tuition support the practical work. These methods are subsequently applied to observational drawings made from a life model, allowing participants to develop a personal response to the techniques and materials studied.

Is this course right for you?

This all-levels course is intended for learners with a range of drawing experience. Introductory experience may be useful but is not essential, while more experienced participants can focus on specified techniques. Learners should be able to follow written and verbal instructions and take part in group discussion.
