Drawing portraits for beginners

About this course

Learners study the proportions of the face while drawing from a life model, using line, tone, light and shadow to represent volume. The course explores how pencil and charcoal produce different effects and approaches to drawing the human face. Teaching combines practical studio work with short demonstrations, one-to-one tutoring and group discussion. Observation and measurement are used to develop portrait drawings and create a convincing likeness.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners with no or little previous drawing experience. It involves practical studio work from a life model, demonstrations, individual guidance and group discussion. Participants should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information.

• Basic drawing of simple objects may be helpful but is not essential
• The course includes group discussion alongside individual drawing work
