About this course

Participants work from a simple commercial pattern to plan and construct a garment. The course covers taking measurements, understanding pattern symbols, choosing fabric, positioning and marking pattern pieces, cutting, and applying sewing techniques during construction. Teaching combines weekly visual demonstrations and verbal explanations with independent project work, written handouts, diagrams, group discussion and one-to-one guidance. Progress is considered through discussion, individual teaching, assessment records and the practical work produced.

Is this course right for you?

Although listed as Beginner (A1), the course description presents it as intermediate and is aimed at learners with previous garment-making skills or limited skills they want to improve. Participants should be able to use a sewing machine confidently and will work independently with guided support.

• Some garment-making experience is supported, including learners looking to improve limited skills
• The course involves independent project work alongside demonstrations, group discussion and one-to-one teaching
• Working on the project at home may help learners progress faster, but is not essential

Before you go

• Participants need to buy suitable fabric. Advice is provided, with simple patterns and easy-to-handle fabrics such as cotton, cotton blend or linen recommended.
• Participants need to provide sewing equipment including a tape measure, notebook, pens or pencils, sellotape, a 30cm ruler, tailors chalk, hand-sewing needles, a threader, sewing thread, fabric and paper scissors, an un-picker or small embroidery scissors, pins, and a folder for handouts and samples.
• A supplier list is available at the start of the course.
• Homework is permitted but not essential.
