About this course

The course develops hand and foot technique alongside more complex rhythmic and ensemble work across contemporary drumming styles. Learners practise timekeeping with and without a click or backing track, apply techniques to specific styles, distinguish between different musical approaches and develop chart-reading skills. Teaching combines verbal instruction, practical demonstrations, group and individual practice, discussions, question-and-answer sessions and regular tutor feedback. Learners also perform in front of the class, applying their playing within a given style.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for intermediate players with around a year’s experience or equivalent ability. The stated entry requirements include prior study at specified drum kit levels, or the ability to play crotchet-, quaver-, triplet- and semiquaver-based grooves, together with some knowledge of basic music notation. Learners are expected to practise regularly, participate in class activities and perform for the group.

  • Previous drum kit study or equivalent playing ability is required
  • Some knowledge of basic music notation is expected
  • Regular practice between lessons is essential
  • Class performance is part of the course
