About this course

The course develops drum kit technique through continued work on rudiments, rhythmic concepts and timekeeping. Participants explore styles including Afro-Caribbean rhythms, alongside Pop, Rock, Funk, Shuffle and Jazz applications, and practise using appropriate stylistic vocabulary. Teaching combines verbal instruction, practical demonstrations, group and individual practice, discussions, question-and-answer sessions and regular tutor feedback. Participants also perform in front of the class.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for intermediate drummers with at least three years’ experience or equivalent skills. Entry is based on previous Level 1 and 2 study or the ability to play specified grooves, recognise several styles, and read basic drum charts. Tutor approval is required.

• Requires confident crotchet, quaver, triplet and semiquaver-based groove playing
• Includes both group and individual practice
• Regular practice between classes is described as essential
• Participants may be exposed to high volume levels

Before you go

• Bring a pair of drumsticks.
• A notepad and pen are optional.
• Earplugs are strongly encouraged because lessons may involve high volume levels.
