Early Modern British History – Part 2 (1485-1603)

About this course

The course examines British history from the end of the Wars of the Roses to Elizabeth I’s death, including the Tudor dynasty, the English Reformation, the reigns of Edward VI and Mary I, Elizabethan religious settlement and the Armada. Teaching combines tutor presentations with analysis of historical sources and discussion of differing historical opinions. Class discussion provides opportunities to consider key events and personalities from different perspectives. Further reading and documentaries are recommended to extend the topics explored in class.

The course is intended for learners who do not have previous knowledge of history. A reasonable level of English is expected for discussing complex themes. Sessions combine tutor presentations, source analysis and class discussion, so participation involves considering and sharing views about historical material.
