About this course

The course surveys British history from the reign of James I through the later Stuart monarchs, covering direct rule under Charles I, the Civil War, the Commonwealth, the Protectorate, the Restoration and the Glorious Revolution. It also considers the political and social developments associated with the rise of constitutional monarchy. Teaching combines tutor presentations with analysis of historical sources and discussion of historians’ interpretations. Learners will examine the period’s key events and personalities, with wider reading and documentaries suggested for study outside class.
