About this course
The course examines how successive Labour and Conservative governments have shaped health and social provision in the UK. Topics include the NHS and social care, welfare benefits, workers’ rights, education systems and higher-education funding. Sessions consider historical developments alongside recent policy positions, including NHS market reforms, responses to Covid, universal credit, trade-union policy, employment rights, academies and tuition fees. Teaching combines lectures with discussion and invited participation, while learners may undertake optional reading or documentary viewing outside class.
