About this course
The course combines talks, demonstrations, listening assignments, note-taking and practical workshops with group learning and in-class performances. Participants work on songs, riffs, chords and scales while developing fretboard knowledge and applying music theory to keys and chord progressions. Lead guitar work includes improvisation, choosing scales to play over chords, and using techniques across different positions and musical genres.

- Identify notes across the fretboard and work out the notes and chords in a key.
- Improvise lead guitar solos using scales that fit the underlying chords.
- Apply lead guitar techniques and play scales in different positions.

This course is intended for improver-level players with some electric guitar experience, including knowledge of songs, chords and scales. The source indicates around a year’s experience and expects learners to complete weekly assignments and prepare tunes for performance. It is taught through group work as well as individual practice.
- It forms part of a continuous Electric Guitar 2 programme, with the option to join at any term and catch up on missed material.
- Learners should be prepared to perform tunes in class.

- Learners must bring an electric guitar to lessons.
- Amps are provided when needed.
- Bring manuscript paper, a notebook and writing materials.
- Weekly homework and tune preparation are required.
