About this course

The course examines the history and structure of capital letterforms, including proportion, spacing, rhythm and balance. Participants practise pointed-pen control, pressure variation and stroke development, then explore flourishes, ligatures and contemporary variations while maintaining legibility. Tutor-led demonstrations are followed by in-class practice, design experiments and personalised feedback. Participants develop layouts that combine capitals with text and work towards polished decorative pieces, with further refinement encouraged between sessions.

What you'll learn

  • Construct balanced capital letterforms with greater precision.
  • Control pen pressure, rhythm and spacing to produce refined strokes.
  • Apply flourishes, ligatures and stylistic variations while preserving clarity.
  • Create composed calligraphy layouts and polished decorative work.
