About this course

The course introduces hand embroidery through a structured progression from basic stitches, including running, laced running, whipped running and back stitch, to more involved decorative methods. Participants explore French knots, spiderweb stitches, ribbon roses, couching, cross stitch, satin stitch, thread painting and raised satin stitch for stump-work. Teaching spans several embroidery styles, including ribbon-work and cut-work, with techniques demonstrated and developed through guided practice. The programme also covers stitches such as chain, blanket, buttonhole, daisy, stem, herringbone, fly, feather and bullion stitch.

What you'll learn

  • Apply foundational embroidery stitches, including running stitch, back stitch and chain stitch
  • Create decorative effects using French knots, spiderweb stitches and ribbon roses
  • Use overcast stitch for cut-work and ribbon stitch for silk ribbon flowers
  • Apply long and short satin stitch and split stitch in thread painting
  • Produce raised satin stitch associated with stump-work
