About this course

The course introduces the basic steps and formations of English country dancing through dance practice, with learners working to music and responding to fellow dancers as they share the space. Activities cover formations such as heys and the performance of simple dances, both with and without calls. Learning may also draw on films, photography, websites and online communities related to English country dancing. The class is open to dancers of different levels, with complete beginners particularly encouraged to enrol in the autumn term.

Is this course right for you?

This open class is intended for dancers at different levels, including complete beginners, who want to learn English country dancing. Participation involves standing for periods and requires a reasonable level of fitness, mobility and movement co-ordination. Learners do not need to attend with a partner.

  • No dance partner is required.
  • Complete beginners are particularly encouraged to enrol in the autumn term.

Before you go

  • Wear comfortable, flexible, soft-soled, low-heeled indoor shoes. Jazz dance shoes are described as suitable; trainers should not be worn.
  • Excellent attendance and punctuality are required.
  • Some activities may need to be completed outside class.
  • Class activities may be photographed or filmed for learning and publicity purposes, with an opportunity to consent or decline.
