English Song Masterclasses

About this course

The course examines classical concert-song repertoire in English, including works by British and non-British composers. Participants choose songs to perform for the class and receive guidance on performance, interpretation and vocal technique. Sessions also consider how vocal and piano writing connect, with feedback from the tutor and support from a class accompanist. Learners are expected to prepare new repertoire between sessions and perform regularly during the course.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for advanced singers at Grade 8 and beyond. Entry is by successful audition, and participants perform their chosen songs to peers, prepare repertoire between sessions and may take part in an informal end-of-term performance.

Before you go

• Bring two copies of the chosen piece each week, one for the tutor and one for the accompanist.
• Bring suitable equipment for recording or making notes.
• Set aside preparation time between classes.
• Prepare one English-language song for the audition and bring copies of the music for the tutor and accompanist.
