Engraving: curved surfaces and lettering scripts

About this course

The course develops engraving on both flat and curved surfaces through repeated work with small images, focusing on accuracy and consistency. It also introduces simpler Roman and italic lettering scripts, along with additional tools for refining engraved designs. Teaching combines group demonstrations, discussions, examples, handouts and one-to-one guidance. A short recap of introductory techniques is included, but the course concentrates on extending existing engraving skills rather than teaching the discipline from the beginning.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for intermediate and advanced jewellery students who have completed an introductory engraving course and want to extend their work to curved surfaces and lettering. Learning takes place through demonstrations, group discussion and individual guidance, with course work structured to be completed in class.

• Previous introductory engraving study is expected
• Not intended for complete beginners to engraving
• Suitable for learners developing beyond fundamental engraving techniques

Before you go

• Basic tools and equipment are provided.
• Some basic materials, including base metals and workshop sundries, are supplied in reasonable quantities.
• Learners may bring their own images to engrave, no larger than 20mm by 20mm.
• Learners wishing to work in silver or on a larger scale must provide their own metal.
