ESOL Entry 1

About this course

The course develops foundational English for everyday communication and basic written tasks. Learners practise recognising letters, understanding texts and their purpose, completing simple forms, and writing with accurate spelling, grammar and punctuation. Speaking and listening work focuses on everyday conversations. Teaching combines class activities, homework and regular assessment. Learners may be entered for Trinity-accredited ESOL Entry 1 reading and writing exams when their teacher considers them ready. The course content follows the National Standards for Adult Literacy and the Adult ESOL Core Curriculum.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for beginner-level ESOL learners who already have some knowledge of English and are planning to live permanently in the UK, work there or seek work there. It is exam-based, with participation in classes, homework and examinations forming part of the course.

• Some existing English knowledge is expected rather than complete-beginner study.
• Homework is required alongside classroom learning.
• Learners should be prepared for regular assessment and possible reading and writing exams.

Before you go

• Learners should bring pens and paper to class.
• Homework is set for study outside class; additional home study is recommended for learners preparing for the examinations.
• Learners should tell their teacher promptly if they need in-class support or exam access arrangements.
