About this course

The course examines the shift from empires and monarchies towards nation states, liberal democracy and socialism, alongside the economic and social changes reshaping European societies. It also considers imperial expansion and the rivalries that contributed to the outbreak of the First World War. Teaching combines tutor presentations with group discussion and guided analysis of historical documents, images and video clips. Class materials and further resources are made available online.
