European Cinema: WW2 to the Present Day

About this course

The course examines postwar cinema in Italy, France, Britain, Germany and Spain, considering how national liberation and changing cultural conditions shaped New Wave movements. It covers key films, directors and themes including authorship, realism and self-reflexivity, alongside production practices, criticism, festivals and other aspects of film culture. Teaching combines tutor presentations, PowerPoint material, film clips and group discussion. Participants view selected films in their own time and use suggested further films and reading to place the movements in historical and critical context.
