About this course

The course introduces contemporary ceramics through practical work with different clays, hand-building methods, slip decoration, surface treatments and glazing. Participants can make functional or sculptural pieces while exploring ideas related to form, texture and purpose. Teaching combines tutor demonstrations with individual studio practice. Short discussions of influential contemporary ceramicists provide context for the making activities, while learners also receive guidance on ceramic tools, kiln preparation and firing practices.

Is this course right for you?

The course is open to complete beginners and learners at intermediate level, with sessions combining demonstrations and individual studio practice. Ceramics includes physical tasks such as wedging and rolling clay, so a moderate level of physical fitness is indicated.

  • Includes wedging and rolling out clay, which involve moderate physical activity.

Before you go

  • An apron or old shirt is required.
  • A sketchbook and pen are useful.
  • The tutor will advise participants about tools to purchase.
  • Clay is available to purchase from the tutor.
