Experimental Printmaking Afternoon

About this course

The course combines tutor demonstrations with independent development of personal printmaking projects. Participants can explore processes such as monoprinting, drypoint, block and relief printing, stencils, collagraphy, carborundum, multiple-plate and layered printing, chine collé and mixed media approaches. The focus varies to suit the group, with attention to colour, texture, combining methods and developing individual techniques. Participants receive an induction to the studio and equipment, including etching-press use, followed by guidance on safe print production. They can apply demonstrated methods to their own ideas, receive feedback, and discuss work and discoveries with other learners. Press and hand-printing methods for registering and editioning prints are also covered.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for mixed-ability adult learners with some printmaking or wider art experience, including adventurous beginners and people developing a portfolio. Participation is largely self-directed, with demonstrations, discussion, negotiation and regular feedback shaping individual projects.

• Not intended for learners with little or no art experience.
• Suitable for artists from other disciplines who want to explore printmaking.
• Portfolio development, including Access and Pre-foundation work, can be incorporated.
• Experienced printmakers may bring prepared plates to print by prior negotiation.

Before you go

• Bring a sketchbook or ideas book and a soft pencil each week.
• Previous work, such as prints or work from another art form, should be brought to the first session.
• Sketches, drawings, photographs, colour plans or printing blocks and plates may need to be prepared in advance.
• Shared tools and equipment are provided. Personal rollers, knives or lino-cutting tools may also be used.
• A range of papers, inks and colours is available, with some materials provided.
• The course uses water-soluble inks and non-solvent-based systems as part of its safe printmaking practice.
