About this course

Participants develop visual ideas from thumbnails into more resolved illustrations, exploring colour palettes, layout principles and the features of effective book covers. Traditional artwork is combined with basic Photoshop manipulation and typographic treatment to create a finished cover design. Teaching includes presentations, demonstrations, practical work, individual and group tutoring, and discussion. The course also introduces examples from historical and contemporary creatives and considers the book market. Learners may be given extension activities to complete outside class and will be encouraged to reflect on their work.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for intermediate learners who can demonstrate basic idea-generation skills. Previous graphic design experience is not required, while basic knowledge of Adobe software and Mac computers may be useful but is not essential. Participation includes individual work, group discussion, demonstrations and tutoring.

  • Some basic ability to generate ideas is expected
  • English is needed to follow instructions and take part in discussions
  • Additional activities may be set for work outside class

Before you go

  • Learners are recommended to bring artwork, sketches or existing books for inspiration.
  • An A5 or A4 sketchbook is recommended for recording ideas.
  • A USB drive is recommended for transferring work to and from the course.
  • Basic materials and resources are available as part of the course; any additional materials will be discussed if needed.
