About this course

Learners develop a sustained body of work or small series while making considered choices about materials, scale, composition and pace. Sessions combine experimentation, discussion and reflection with time to revise, refine and resolve pieces. The course also considers artists, visual traditions across cultures and contemporary practices, helping participants discuss their intentions and influences in a wider context. Work is developed both in class and independently, with learners encouraged to assess possible directions for their practice.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for intermediate learners who already have a foundation in drawing and painting. Participants are expected to work with increasing independence in and outside the classroom, discuss their work and engage regularly with their practice.

  • At least one year of drawing and painting experience is expected
  • New learners have a short assessment with the tutor before the course begins

  • Learners should be prepared to practise regularly at home and complete occasional homework.
